Indian Hindu wedding ceremonies are rich and full of a culture that is centuries old. Hindus from different areas of India each have their own regional interpretations, but the traditional Indian wedding ceremony has customs that have deep philosophical significance. While there are many variations on the ceremony, most versions include these common customs.

Hindu engagements are meant to build a solid foundation for the new couple, so the bride's and groom's family join each other for a dinner party and exchanging of sweets. After the gold wedding rings are exchanged, it's time to start thinking about the wedding ceremony.

Wedding - Rituals: The Fire Deity Witnesses

Indian wedding ceremonies take place outdoors, under a canopy called a mandap. Under the mandap is the primary witness of the marriage -- the fire deity Agni, or the sacred fire. The wedding day begins with the playing of the Mangal Vadya, a reed instrument common to North and West India, then the Noubat, a set of traditional drums.

Following the introduction, the groom arrives with his family and friends and is greeted by the bride's family. Next, the bride is escorted to the altar by her Mama, or maternal uncle, and placed behind a veil of white curtains that symbolize barriers. Her father thanks the gods and the veil is removed, and everyone understands it's time to begin the ceremony.
